On January 31, 2024, Veritas Appliance customers were informed about Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) OS versions 8.6 and 7.9 reaching end of support on May 31, 2024 and June 30, 2024 respectively. To continue receiving RHEL OS vulnerability fixes, customers need to upgrade to the latest RHEL OS 8.8-based Appliance releases. The following email reminder is planned to be sent to all Appliance customers on May 1, 2024.

***********************************************************************************************************************************

Dear Veritas Appliance customer,

This is a follow up to the email sent on January 31, 2024. As you know, Veritas Appliances are protected by a hardened version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Operating System (OS).  Please refer to this article that lists the RHEL version used by different releases of Veritas Appliances. The same article also lists the end of OS Vulnerability Fix support date, which is the earlier of the end of RHEL support date and end of Veritas primary support date.

To continue receiving OS vulnerability fixes and keep your appliances secure and operating efficiently, you must take the following action.

  •          You must upgrade to the latest RHEL 8.8-based Appliance releases by May 31, 2024 (if currently running a RHEL 8.6-based Appliance release)
  •          You must upgrade to the latest RHEL 8.8-based Appliance releases by June 7, 2024, or June 30, 2024 (if currently running RHEL 7.9-based Appliance release)
  • Irrespective of whether you take the above action or not, you will continue to get support per Veritas product lifecycle; however, by not taking the above action in a timely manner, you risk exposing your appliances to serious OS vulnerabilities.

Veritas understands that upgrading the Appliance releases may also require an upgrade of your NetBackup estate, as the software stacks are tightly coupled on some platforms.  We apologize for the short notice in exposing the underlying Red Hat lifecycle and the potential impact on your upgrade plans.  For future planning purposes, the Red Hat Extended Update Support (EUS) lifecycle is two years for the even dot releases until the final release, which has a five-year support life.  Red Hat will provide vulnerability fixes only during the Minor Release or EUS window.  All 8.x versions will be supported by Red Hat until mid-2029, but only version 8.10 will have vulnerability fixes from mid-2025 to mid-2029.  Once Red Hat 8.10 is released later this year, all Appliances will move to Red Hat 8.10 in the next release.

Although RHEL 7.9 reaches end-of-support on June 30, 2024, Veritas will continue to support your Appliance versions based on our product lifecycle (including RHEL 7.9 based versions).  In the past two years, Veritas has opened fewer than a half dozen cases against version RHEL 7.9 with Red Hat related to a customer support case.  Of those, none required an OS software fix as the triage isolated the issue to Veritas code.

If you have any questions, please Contact Support | Veritas™  or create a Support case Online.

    Sincerely,

    Your Veritas Support Team

Hello Veritas team,

In response to your company's notification, we like to clarify one thing first:

a) Please share the appropriate Veritas NetBackup Appliance Upgrade Guide (I found one release 3.1.1). Our system information as follows:

NBU appliance 5250, RHEL 7.9 based on below kernel 3.10.0-1160

Hi @tsysadmin

This is not a Veritas support site and is run by the wider NetBackup community.

This question is best answered by logging a support case.  That said, the appliance OS and NetBackup go together - you need to upgrade to a supported NetBackup appliance OS version. Looking at the OS version on the appliance is not entirely helpful.

Have a look at this page and filter for your specific appliance version https://sort.veritas.com/eosl

Appliance version 4.x looks to reach EOSL in June this year (this versions uses NetBackup 9.x).
I'd suggest upgrading to appliance version 5.x (which uses NetBackup version 10.x).

To upgrade, determine which version you want to go to and download the upgrade documentation for that release. Also, on the download support site (where the software can be obtained), there are various links to articles on pre and post upgrade tasks to perform to ensure a smooth upgrade.

Cheers
David
