VMwaare SAN Backup / Port 902 es necessary?

Hello,

Please support me with this query, we have a Flex Appliance platform with 3 instances: Primary/Media/Worm Storage Server.

The media server is a backup host and has two fiber ports assigned in VMware SAN Transport mode.

The respective zones have been configured between Storage (VMware Datastores) and the Backup Host.

Some backups work via SAN but others have error 6, and do not work via any transport method: NBD, SAN, HOTADD.

ERR - Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: Status 23.

The question is: when running backups via SAN, is port 902 necessary between the backup host and the ESXi? Because we have been able to observe that when the data goes through Fiber Channel (SAN) this port is not being used, we believe that it is exclusive for backups over LAN (NBD through the NFC protocol).

We have several ESXi with restrictions and we cannot open this port 902, but the SAN backup is failing.

Thanks for your comments.

Regarding your question about port, you are right, 902 is required between your vmware backup host and ESXI servers when you use transport mode other than SAN(sslNBD, NBD, hotADD do require 902).
Kindly read below article  to understand more about each transport mode:

now, regarding the error, you are facing ,.if working backup /not working are on different policies, first confirm the attributes of working and not working policies, make sure you have selected the right backup host and etc.
if you working backup are for a specific datastore and not working are for a different datastore , that could show that this is an issue related to datastore not being visible(exported properly ) to vmware backup host.

you can enable logging for VMware on VMware backup host , and provide the details to us to find out more about the issue:
