BE tips + tricks: remotely access your Backup Exec server with a browser or smartphone

Just about everyone enjoys engaging new tools—especially engineers. So, when Backup Exec engineers read about Chrome Remote Desktop on the Web, we thought we’d test its capabilities with BE.

In this image, you see the Backup Exec UI as seen on a mobile phone screen using the Chrome Remote Desktop app.The communications with the machine being accessed remotely are secure—in this case the Backup Exec server. Visit the Chrome Remote Desktop site using the Chrome browser, and you’ll set up the remote access on your Backup Exec server—it’s effortless. The server’s remote access is tied to your Google account, and there is an additional numeric PIN you set up for securing access to this server from the browser. Of course, you can also do the same with the Chrome browser on a desktop.

Please note, every organization will have its own policies on what can or cannot be used. I’ve placed additional details below to help you make an informed decision.

• You don’t need to set up a VPN for this to work.
• From a network port perspective, we see that it requires outgoing TCP connections to HTTPS port (443) and the XMPP port (5222) to be enabled both on the Backup Exec server, and the browser/phone from which you are accessing the server.
