Unparalleled insights driving downstream discovery, compliance, and storage optimization
GDPR is now a reality for British Airways and Marriott International, with fines of £183 million ($228 million) and £99 million ($124 million) served respectively for data breaches of their customers’ personal data. Comparably, the FTC fined Equifax $700 million for its 2017 data breach and approved a record fine of 5 billion for Facebook for their involvement in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Really, July was a record-breaking month for regulators globally.
Regardless of location or regulation, these fines may cause some to question what data is being stored? How is it being used? And, most importantly, is it being protected? None of these questions can be answered without knowing where personal data resides across the enterprise.
Announcing Veritas Information Studio 1.1
Veritas Information Studio 1.1 delivers unparalleled insights driving downstream discovery, compliance, and storage optimization workflows. Understand where data resides to reduce associated risk and make intelligent data-driven decisions. The 1.1 release delivers deeper insights into your NetBackup footprint, with advanced classification, flexible reporting, and remediation workflows—all helping organizations mitigate regulatory risk and reputational damage.
The embedded Veritas Information Classifier now ships with 120+ preconfigured policies and over 700 patterns, designed to help organizations automate the identification of data that may be subject to vertical, country, and/or data privacy specific regulations. The same classification engine can be used to build custom policies to quickly surface areas of value, such as intellectual property. Enterprises can opt in to automatically extract the content of classification matches and/or named entities. Named Entity Recognition (NER) relies on context to identify people, places, and organizations from free-form text.
The benefits of Information Studio enhanced data classification capabilities
With the enhanced data classification capabilities of Information Studio, you can respond to regulatory requests quicker and more accurately. A user with sufficient privileges can quickly search for specific attributes and produce an item level report of potentially responsive data. Helpful, as what we’ve discovered is Subject Access Requests under GDPR are just the tip of the regulatory iceberg; the global regulatory landscape is rapidly evolving, with new standards like LGPD of Brazil and the California Consumer Privacy Act (in effect January 2020), amongst others, giving more rights to the individual relative to their personal data.
Many regulations are dictating that data retention must be tied to a specific business purpose. The ability to maintain big data is especially meaningful, with data minimization playing an important role in doing so successfully. In reality, data minimization has traditionally been hard to implement—no one wants the sole responsibility of hitting the delete button. Veritas Information Studio 1.1 introduces an audited, role-based access, approval workflow for defensible data deletion. And, let's be honest, it's much easier to find items of importance when there's less junk in the way.
In this next release, Veritas Information Studio continues to enable the enterprise to mitigate risk and regain control of data through actionable insights. For additional technical details, check out Sandra Moulton’s blog.
