Memorial Day is particularly meaningful for me as a U.S. Navy veteran and the executive sponsor for the Remembering and Empowering Veterans in Veritas (REVIV) Employee Resource Group (ERG). Paying tribute to the men and women who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice for the country is an honor.
I recently hosted a conversation with REVIV members Sr. Technical Support Engineer Tim Patton, Sr. Manager David Clinton, and Sr. Principal Product Manager Mark Coletta about the value of ERGs at Veritas and the unique skillsets that U.S. military veterans contribute to the company.
This Memorial Day, the REVIV team encouraged employees at Veritas to participate in the following local events being held to observe, recognize, and support both those who’ve been lost and their families and loved ones left behind.
Pacific coast – Tribute to Veterans and Military Families (virtual program), Saturday, May 29, 9:00 a.m. – 12 p.m. Sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger and CalVet, register and join the Tribute to Veterans and Military Families. After the ceremony, there will be live breakout sessions with experts who’ll provide information about benefits and resources to veterans, service members, and their families. These sessions will be recorded and available to watch again after the event.
East Coast – National Veterans Monument and Museum (NVMM) Remembrance Ceremony: Observe Memorial Day with this annual remembrance ceremony starting at 10:00 a.m. (ET) on the National Veterans Memorial and Museum rooftop. This year’s ceremony will include special messages and remarks from J. R. Martinez, a U.S. Army Veteran, burn survivor, actor, and author, and NVMM President and CEO Lt. General Michael Ferriter, U.S. Army (Retired). Following the ceremony, continue to remember servicemen and women on social media with the following hash tags: #IWillAlwaysRemember #NVMM #MemorialDay2021. Recognizing military sacrifice around the world
While Memorial Day is a federal holiday specific to the U.S., the international community also recognizes veterans and honors fallen services members at special times of the year, including:
- International Remembrance Day observances held in November to recognize all veterans and thank them for their service.
- South Korea: Memorial Day on June 6, the same month that the Korean War began. A minute of silence is observed at 10:00 a.m. for armed forces members and civilians who lost their lives during the war.
- Australia and New Zealand: Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) Day on April 25.
- Turkey: Martyrs’ Day on March 18 in commemoration of armed forces members who died during the Gallipoli Campaign in WWI.
- Italy: National Unity and Armed Forces Day on November 4.
