Promoting STEM at Veritas: one employee’s daughter demonstrates the value of Veritas' STEM programs
One former employee from Veritas’ Roseville office recently shared an essay composed by his daughter in support of seeking a college scholarship; to our delight, her words demonstrate the value of her experience in Veritas’ past Geek Girls program – a 1-day event hosting students from local schools, centered in STEM topics like computer science.
The goal of Geek Girls is to inspire 9th and 10th grade girls to pursue STEM in academics. As you can see from the essay below, Veritas' Geek Girls partnership made an impression on participants.
A few years ago, I attended an event called Geek Girls. Girls from two different high schools were invited to a software company to learn about technology. There were stations where we experimented with different forms of basic programming. The event was hands-on and much more interesting than sitting in a classroom. This type of work felt more like play.
The summer after my sophomore year I attended the National Student Leadership Conference at Yale. A variety of programs were offered but for me there was only one choice – engineering. Who wouldn't want to build a robot or a catapult? I enjoyed working with other teens who had similar passion for experimenting, building and problem solving. I felt as if I had found my people.
Mathematics is by far my favorite subject and using my hands to create has always been a hobby. From building fairy houses, doodling the layout of the perfect library, or building with Legos, I enjoy creating and putting things together. When I do these things, I lose all sense of time.
This year at school, I am excited to be taking classes that fuel my inner nerd; AP Computer Science, AP Physics and a course in Engineering and Robotics. I really enjoy the logic involved in coding and meticulously working out solutions to what sometimes seem like never ending streams of errors. For a hands-on girl, I now also have better appreciation for the design process and the importance of thinking before diving in.
I want to work in a field that feels like play. I want to surround myself with people who love to experiment, build, and problem solve. I want to fuel my inner nerd, create, explore and lose all sense of time. I’m only eighteen and I don’t yet know what my impact will be, but I hope it is meaningful, challenging, and inspiring.
At Veritas, we continue to participate in and promote STEM-themed events and programs local to our global offices, including our recent work with eMentor and Tech IT Out; we welcome sending Veritas employees into classrooms to share about technology, and routinely identify new opportunities to educate students on tech topics!
Thank you to those in Veritas’ Roseville office for your past efforts in support of Geek Girls, and to all Veritas employees for your continued promotion of STEM among students. Opportunities like these are just a part of what makes #LifeAtVeritas so good.
