Backup exec vss provider

Hi,

Could someone tell me what is the function of "backup exec vss provider" ? How does it benefit the backup process ?

It is set to manual in the services of my virtual machine (windows server 2008 R2) ?

When I try starting it, it complains about " The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

Regards

  • You dont really need to start the service manually, There are Batch files which are called by the VMwae Tools  at the start to request snapshot and then to remove them. These scripts activate the BE VSS provider during backup. You can find this scripts in the Windows folder pre-freeze-script.bat and post-thaw-script.bat. You can try to run these scripts and see if BE VSS service is started. Make sure you run the post-thaw-script.bat at the end so the service return to standby position.

BE VSS Provider is only needed when Application GRT is selected for Backup. It will quiesce the application in the Virtual Machine and would assist with collecting GRT MetaData of the Application.

Note : BE VSS Provider is installed when remote agent is installed. Remote agent is needed on the virtual machine to perform a APP GRT Backup.

To do a NON GRT or GRT (only file folder GRT selected) no remote agent is needed on the virtual machine
