Help required to design backup solution using Backup Exec 3600 Appliance ( NDMP )

Hi All ,

We  are trying to design backup solution for one of our customer  . Please find the below  block diagram for backup solution.

We have some queries designing the backup solution.

  1. Is it possible to do backup of data  directly from NetApp storage to  Tape device  using NDMP agent.
  2. Is it possible to  map  volume from NetApp storage to Backup Exec appliance  & take backup to tape device .
  3. We need to map volume from NetApp storage to one of the Windows VM & then take backup of data on Tape device.

In this case how will be Data flow.

Please suggest which solutions will work & also suggest best solution.

  • all of the three options are possible. But these are totally different to each other.

    1) using the NDMP to backup from netapp directly to tape, will be very fast. Is usefull for large file shares located on netapp and accessible through CIFS

    2) is also possible, but will be much slower, because ACL of every fle /folder will be triggered whilst backup

    3) trying to backup data on a mapped drive of a VM is only possible if the backupexec agent is installed on the VM and the backup is initiated as if the server was physical. Will be the slowest solution, because the flow will pass through the hypervisor to the virtual server, to the share and the ACL will also be triggered

  • Oracle hypervisor is not supported so you have to back up the VM's as if they are physical machines.
