Advanced Open File Option on SBS 2003 premium edition

We have just installed a backup exec 11.d on W2K3 SBS premium edition. We keep getting an error message as follow:

Error category : System ErrorsError : e0008516 - Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34070

We have enabled the Advance Open File Option and selected the "automatically select open file technology" option under the open file configuration option. Does anyone know how to enable the AOFO option on SBS 2003 premium without getting this error message? Thank you.

Plit your backup in two different tasks: one for Exchange without AOFO selected and one for the rest of the data with AOFO selected.

That makes the Exchange backup thouhg the agent and not through VSS.

  • Thanks for the reply David.

So in other words, there is no way that we can have the AOFO selected when backing up the exchange server and all other data in 1 backup task.

Yes you can do it with one job, but with limitations as well. Have a look at the section "Exchange snapshot backups" in the Administrator's guide to see if some of them apply to your situation. Basically you'd better have Exchange 2003 SP1 and use VSS as the AOFO method. No continuous Exchange protection is supported with AOFO.

That makes the use of the agent more appealing to me, so I usually split into two different jobs. Thanks to policies, you can run a job just after the other one, which is really confortable.

  • I just turned on the exchange writer for volume shadow copy service as per the microsoft link in the V-79-57344-34070 support page and my AOFO backups now work without error.
