Agent for VMware vCenter Server Or ESX Host (Not installed)

Hello All,

We are testing the Backup Exec 15 for our virtual environment and need some help.

I am trying to add the Our vCenter host to the BE and the Option is grayed Out. (Agent for vCenter server or ESX host (Not Installed).

I assume i will have to install the agent for vCenter Server and so my question.

1. How to install the Agent / Location of the .exe file? (Attached screenshot of the BE15 installation and it does not show up).

2. Where to install the Agent (Backup Server / vCenter)?

3. We are using VMware V6.0 Appliance so do we install the agent on it?

4. What technology does it use (VDDK / VCB) ?

5. Ports that need to be open for the agent (If installed on the Backup server) to communicate with the VC?

A quick answer will be helpful.

Thank You

  • You need to click on the BE button then click on Installation and Licencing and Install Options and Licences, follow the dialog and enable the VMware option. If you have the licence for the VMware Agent, install it during the dialog. Otherwise, skip it and you would be able to trial the VMware Agent for 60 days. Once the option is enabled, you would be able to see the Add VMware Server button in the button bar. Use this button to add your vCenter server. You don't need to install any agent on the vCenter machine. BE uses VDDK so make sure your ESXi is the licenced version

You need to import license (.slf file) of Agent for VMware on the Backup Exec Media server. The license file will allow you to add ESX host.

    3. We are using VMware V6.0 Appliance so do we install the agent on it?

Agent is required on VM's only if you want to perform GRT backups and restores.

  • @ Amol: Thanks.

We are not looking at Grandular level backups as of now, So i believe we don't need to install the agents on the VM's.

We are running a Trial version of the software. Can you let me know if we are supposed to get the file?

    Thank You

  • In trial version you can use the Agent for VMware and Hyper by just enabling the option.

    Check the below video.

  • The .slf file is the licence file which you will get when you purchase the licence. Since you are trialling the option, you can ignore the previous comment regarding this file. You just need to enable the VMware option to add your vCenter machine. See my comment below
