AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components".

Hi there I am hoping that someone can help me with the error that I am having.

Backup- SRVPRI AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
VSS Snapshot error. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot failed. Make sure that all provider services and tasks are running. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

I am also getting the associated error in event manager, Event ID 12293, source VSS

I am running 3 Windows 2K3 Servers,
Two computers are domain controllers, AD/DHCP/DNS and so forth, one has IIS6 installed and are backing up onto Ultrium 2 Drives, both servers are fully updated of windows update (at least of two weeks ago :) )and are both generating the error.
1 Computer is just a member server though has SQL server installed (and thus the SQL agent) and is backing up onto a DLT4 drive. This server however DOES NOT generate the problem and backups up local shadow copy components fine. It is however not trying to back up Active Directory and errors when I try to backup the shadow copy components on the other servers remotely.
I have no Licence for AOFO so all the options are greyed out and inaccessable , however it has the "auto select" option highlighted under the greying out.

I have looked through the forum for answers and I have tried enabling the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service and running a backup of the shadow copy components and this failed (though I will need to wait until tonight to see it if works with my master backup though I do not hold out any hope).

I have run the "vssadmin list writers" command and all are "Stable"/"No Error"

Any ideas where to go next. I am a trifle concerned as I do not seem to be backing up my Active Directory!

  • Hello,

Have you tried the Microsoft Q article 826936?

Also please see this as additional information:

    Thanks,

  • Yes, unfortunately I have tried all that and everything is "fine", i.e. there are no visible errors however my bcakup still fails.

I was also posting on this, similar, thread

    http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?forumID=103&threadID=62312

Both David and myself have Acronis True Image Server installed and both of us have the same problem, he has removed it and says his backups now work. I have yet to test it as I need a suitable time to remove Ture Image. I also found another post on a random forum where a gentleman was complaining aout True Image server, listed this error as a problem and that it too vanished after uninstalling it. Whilst I don't see it as your problem, is there any way that you (symantec) could investigate if there was an issue with the Win 2K3 Sp1 Server/Backup Exec 10.x/Acronis True Image Server software combination and post some information for your users. I am sure I am not the only person with this combo and IF it is that I know I certainly would have appreciated not spending the whole of yesterday researching the issue.

  • Hi there,
    NT Backup error log is

    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
    Media name: "SysState.bkf created 25/04/2006 at 10:16"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x80042306.
Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 2.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x80042306.
Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 3.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x80042306.
Volume shadow copy creation has failed after trying 3 times. The backup cannot continue.

    ----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

    ----------------------

However I successfully removed Acronis True Image 9.1 and then ran a test backup and successfully backed up the "shadow copy components". I'll be running my normal full backups tonight which will hopefully confirm everything
I as far as I can see in my case it is that that is causing the problem.
  • Hello.

    - When you receive the error even with Ntbackup you need to contact Microsoft..

  • Thanks for the help. It looks like it's a True Image issue rather than a Backup Exec or Microsoft issue, at least in my case. Whether you wish to mention that True Image, at least the current build, causese problems in Backup exec is up to you. Whist it is not your product the fact that errors were occuring in backup exec meant that this was my first port of call and I spent a lot of time on this website trying to find information. In the end it's not your problem however I just thought it might be worth mentioning in the FAQ or something to save your customers some tims
