Backexec 2010 R3 Backup to disk Folder
Dear Everyone,
I need some advice for the backup exec 2010 R3 backup to disk folder. The following is my environment and question regard to backup to disk folder:
3 Media Server with Central Admin and SSO
Every media have their own disk to backup folder
3 media share HP single LTO 4 autoloader
Total Capacity for disk backup = 500GB
Maximum size forbackup-to-disk files = 20GB
Allocate the maximum size for backup-to-disk files = disable
Maximum backup sets per backup-to-disk file = 10
Allow x concurrent jobs for this backup-to-disk folder = 2
Low disk space threhold = 15%
Backup Type: Perform Active Directory system stage backup with GRT enable
Overwrite = 1 week
Append = always allow
During backup 2 type of files created in the backup to disk folder: IMG (GRT) and BKF (File backup). Let say the backup run for 2 weeks.
Question:
1. Why i have 14 IMG file and only 4 BKF file? Each IMG file size is 7GB may be this is AD database. And each BKF file is 250MB. When BKF reach 250MB it create new BKF.
2. Why the BKF reach 250MB it generate new BKF?
3. How to manage backup to disk folder such as space reclaim, purge the old IMG and BKF file?
4. What is this setting Maximum size forbackup-to-disk files (default 4GB) and how it affect the media?
5. This configure "Maximum backup sets per backup-to-disk file" some people mention is how many set of backup in the backup to disk folder. However, some one mention different drive of backup in single job consider is different set, is this correct?
6. Another media server also configure using disk backup with same configuration with above, however when the BKF file reach 4.75GB it create a new BKF file. Not sure why it happend this way although i ready set Maximum size forbackup-to-disk files= 20GB?
Kindly advice if any incorrect configuration.

The backup sets in "Maximum backup sets per backup-to-disk file" refer to a resource that is being backed up, e.g. C: drive, D: drive, SQL database, Exchange, system state, etc. If a job backs up C: drive, D: drive, SQL database, Exchange, system state, this counts as 5 backup sets and not 1 backup set. When you append to a .bkf file, the previous saved backup sets will count towards the total. When the max backup sets is reached, a new .bkf file will be created even if the max filesize is not reached.
A new .bkf file will be created when either the max filesize or the max backup sets is reached whichever is first.
When you backup to disk, your job should always specify overwrite. There are no advantage in appending to the media.
.img files are created when you use GRT, Otherwise, .bkf files are created.
You use OPP to control how fast your .bkf are recycleable and hence you disk usage.
