  • Debian 7.1 is not supported with Backup Exec 2012. The versions supported are between 5.0 to 6.0 till update 3.

However, you may try to install it by referring to the following articles:

  • BE 2010 does not support Debian 7.1
  • Backup Exec (any version) does not support Linux Kernel 3.x. (For details, see https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/ralus-linux-any-hope-kernel-3x-supporthttp://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH201095, http://blog.redweb.at/2012/08/howto-backupexec-2012-linux-agent-and-kernel-3-0-debian/; the bug is old and so trivial it can be patched by changing a single byte in the binary, but for some reason Symantec doesn't want to correct it.)

So you're limited to Linux distributions still running on a 2.x kernel, ie. basically to RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 (kernel 2.6.18) and 6 (kernel 2.6.32). Backup Exec doesn't "support" the latest updates of these either, but you'll probably get away with it. It won't stop working if you install the "unsupported" update, you just can't call Symantec support anymore.
