Backup Citrix Server with SQL database

Hi,

I need a backupExec solution for backing up Citrix server using Backup Exec 2012. I have 1 sql db on this server with 2 virtual cpu's?

Does i need VMware licese with application and db license? or just the vm license be sufficient?

 Thanks

  • If you want to backup the VM as a VM, then you need BOTH the AVVI agent licence as well as the Agent for Applications and Databases licence.  The former is for backing up the VM and the latter is for backing up the SQL database.

Alternatively, you can back up the VM as if it is a physical machine.  In this case, you only need  the Agent for Applications and Databases licence to back up the SQL database.

In both cases, you need to install the remote agent in the VM.

  • Citrix is not supported.  If the Citrix server can be backed up as physical server, then you would need an Agent for Applications and Databases licence to backup the SQL Server database

    *EDIT*

My previous answer is not very clear.

From your description, it is not clear whether you are backing up a XenServer host.  XenServer is not supported.

If your SQL Server database is hosted in a VM on the XenServer host, then you cannot back this up as a VM.  However, you can load the remote agent on this machine and back up this VM as if it is a physical machine. You would need an Agent for Applications and Databases licence to do this.

    *END EDIT*

  • Citrix is not supported ?
why these answer ? In this Case it is unimportant.

You have to Backup this Citrix Host with Backup Exec 2012.

If you have V-Ray Licence you dont need any additional Licence.
Backuping VM with BE-Agent inside for SQL-GRT.

If you have no V-Ray, you need an addition BE-Agent Licence for Application and Databases.

  • You have to Backup this Citrix Host with Backup Exec 2012.

As I said before, Citrix is not supported so you cannot back up the Citrix host with BE like you can with a VMware or a Hyper-V host.  The VM's hosted on this host will not be recognised.

The V-Ray licence does not have the ability to backup a Citrix host.

  • If it is Citrix XEN-Server then you have right. You cannot backup this VM on a Citrix Xen-Server Host with BE2012.

But in my opinion he need assistance for licence Citrix XENAPP or XENDESKTOP as VM on a VMWare-Host or Hyper-V Host.

  • The user is not clear on his configuration.  If it the Citrix server is a VM on a Hyper-V or VMware host, it can either be backed up as a VM, in which case, he will need a AVVI or Hyper-V licence, or the V-Ray edition.  In addition, he will need the Agent for Application and Database licence to backup the SQL database.  This licence is included in the V-Ray edition.

Alternatively, he can backup the VM as a physical machine, as I have suggested earlier.  He would still need the Agent for Application and Database licence to backup the SQL database

  • Hi All,

Thank you for all your comments.

PKH- The Citrix server is a VM running on VMware host. So i assume this can be back it up? Do i still need the agent for VMWare or just the application and db license be sufficient to backup the sql db?

    Thanks
