Backup Exec 10d Remote Agent crashes during Backup

Hi guys,
we use the following configuration:

SBS2003 with SP1 (OS SP2), Exchange SP2, all recent Windows updates;
Backup Exec 10d, locally installed; Version 10.1 Rev. 5629 with SP3 and hot fix 48;
We back up normal data and our Exchange Server;

Backup starts at night and seems to work fine, during the process (must be between backup and inspection) the beremote.exe (Remote Agent) crashes and the backup job fails with error 0x000846b - "The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.
Make sure that the Remote Agent is installed on the target computer and is running."

It seems like the Data is correctly written to tape and the inspection fails - just a thought.
Sometime the backup job also crashes with error 0xe00084f8 - The network connection to the backup exec remote agent was lost.
I already tried to change the default port number of the remote agent as descriped in
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/255174.htm
Didn't change anything - what else can I do?

Thanks in advance.
Michael

  • Hy guys, just to bring this to an end (and possibly help peoble reading this):
    In my case corrupt objects in an PF (Exchange 2003 public folder) where causing the problem.

    The remote agent crashed when the backup job wanted to backup this folder.
    I excluded the folder and from there on the backup was fine (I could have searched the corrupt files, but the folder is an ald archive and doesn't need backup).

    Thanks
    Michael
  • Try running a repair of that agent and see if that fixes things. It has happened to a couple of my sites before, and reinstalling the agent worked.

    Hello Mats let me ask u are u backing up the Exchage database from the remote server, if yes i guess AOFO option is being used in the job which will crash the remote agent service,

    in job setup right click on the job than on the left hand side click on the Advance open file and uncheck the option use advance open file, restart the remote agent servie on the remote server and than run the job.

    m sure u should not see the remote agent service crashing after that, Let me know if this resolves the issue.
  • Hi guys, thanks for your answers.

    @CraigV: It seems like I can't manually reinstall the remote agent on my (local) server. It is not listed anywhere as "stand alone - product". The only thing I could try is to run the Backup Exec setup again and select the "repair" - option. Is that what you are talking about?

    @Masti24by7: No, I am backing up the Exchange DB from the local machine where Backup Exec is installed. AOFO is not (and was not) enabled anyhow...

    Thanks
  • Well, if you browse to your installation path and run the setup, the bottom option will be to install the Remote Agent locally. Run this option, and follow the prompts.
  • My installatio path is
    C:\programs\veritas\backupexec\nt
    I can't start setup from this folder - there is no setup in it.

    If I start the "normal" setup via the control panel, I can't find the option for installing the remote agent - the options look like this (unfortenetely it is in german):

    imagebrowser image

    The bottom point says "Remote installation" - as far as I can tell this option is for installing the agents on REMOTE servers or computers. That is not what I am looking for - isn't it?
  • Could it be a problem that the versions of "beremote.exe" and "ndmpsrvr.dll" are different?

    From the eventlog (german):

    Fehlgeschlagene Anwendung beremote.exe, Version 10.1.5629.34, fehlgeschlagenes Modul ndmpsrvr.dll, Version 10.1.5629.43, Fehleradresse 0x000853dc.#

    In english this has to sound like that:
    "Faulting application beremote.exe, Version...., faulting module ndmpsrvr.dll, version...".

    Beremote.exe Faulting application, version 10.1.5629.34, faulting module ndmpsrvr.dll, version 10.1.5629.43, fault address 0x000853dc. #

    Mats i would suggest you rename the ndmpsrvr.dll file in the installation directory of  Backup Exec (by default C:progarm files\symantec\backupe exec)

    and than restart the services

    run the Excahange backup job make sure the AOFO is not selected  let me know if it completes successfully or not

  • Thanks for your answer Masti,
    I found out that I obviously have a problem with the Exchange public folders (which I am backing up locally) - if I run the backup without them it completes succesfull.

    I will test your advise anyhow (with a backup job including the PFs) and give you an info!

  • If I rename the "ndmpsrvr.dll" - file, I can't start the Backup Exec Remote Agent service anymore!
