Backup Exec 15 Tape library goes offline when backup launched

Hi All,

I'm running Backup Exec 15 on 4 new Windows server 2012 R2 Standard builds. New HP equipment (server and tape library). They all have this issue were the tape library drops offline when you try to run a backup. Usually you can stop/start the BE services and get the backup to run. Sometimes it takes several tries. My software is patched up and I'm out of ideas. Can never rely on backups running and starting to get pinged by our monitoring crew about missed backups. Any suggestions would be appreciated. - Thanks

"Robotic library hardware error. The robotic library has reported a general hardware error condition. Manual intervention, calibration, etc., may be required. This may be a device related hardware problem, or it may be some other hardware problem (i.e. SCSI card/bus etc.). The library and drive states have been set to offline. Please attend to this condition.

  • 1) If you are running any of the HP Insight software, uninstall them.

    2) Check that the HBA of your tape drive does not support RAID.  If it support RAID, then check that they are listed in this document

    3) In the Windows Device Manager, check that the library and tape drive is recognised and functioning correctly. The library should appear as an Unknown Medium Changer with a Microsoft driver and the tape drive should have a Symantec driver.

    4) If the above is o.k. and the problem persists, run the HP LT&T tool against the tape library and tape drive.  Make sure you select the write test and that you have stopped all the BE services beforehand.
