Backup Exec 2010 R2 - LTO-4

Hi,

I just got an LTO-4 driver including 20x tapes. I'm looking for documentation on how to properly configure Backup Exec tasks and media sets to work with tapes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi there,

Depends on what you want to do really.

    I'd suggest considering:

    1. Creating policies...Better management of jobs, especially if you're running differential/incremental which will only run with a policy.

    2. If an autoloader, you can consider partitioning it. I do that with our tape libraries, and direct daily/weekly/monthly jobs to various slots. Some people recommend not doing this, but it is a personal preference. If a single-slot drive, this is a moot point.

    3. Splitting databases (Exchange/SQL etc) from data backups, and not using AOFO with database backups.

For everything else, there is the BE 2010 R2 Admin Guide which you can download on the link below:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC2211

Give it a read, and if there is anything else you don't understand, open a new forum query. Backups and their configuration are personal preferences, but you can get a very good idea of how they're configured by reading those sections in the Admin Guide you're looking at...

    Thanks!

  • Configuring you media set depends on how long you company want to prevent the data, it depends on the data you are going to backup daily , depends on backup stratergy (incremental , differential , full). Incase if you have some Plan we can help you to improve it by providing some pointers .. We can provide you suggestion if you tell us what you are trying to achive ...

  • Thanks your help guys,

I think I have a good strategy now, this thread helped me alot also: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/backup-design-disk-and-duplicate-tape

  • 3. Splitting databases (Exchange/SQL etc) from data backups, and not using AOFO with database backups.

Does that mean I have to create different policies for Data and Exchange backups or just different templates? I'd like to use Data and Exchange backup templates on the same policy.

We do not have a robotic library just a single slot LTO-4 drive. Therefore I'd like to have Data and Exchange backups duplicated to the same tape every night.

Which also means I would have to store both, Data and Exchange backups, on the same Media Set. Is that a problem?

    EDIT:

I just realized that I cannot use the same policy for Data and Exchange backup without using the same templates, right? So I have to create two policies, one for Data and one for Exchange backup?
