Backup Exec 2010 R3 - Duplicate issues

Hello,

since we upgraded our installation from Backup Exec 2010 R2 (fully patched on Windows 2008 R2) to Backup Exec 2010 R3, it is not possible to duplicate an existing backup set. Its a tape to tape duplicate job, which runs from our LTO3 library to the LTO4 library.

The job fails with E00081D9 - Tge Backup Exec job engine is not responding, at the active alerts it reports "The drive hardware is offline". There are the same events in the windows event viewer and some more for Example:

Event 257:

A memory dump has been captured C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\BEDBG\bengine.exe_3208_0.dmp

Event 1000:

Faulting application name: bengine.exe, version: 13.0.5204.0, time stamp: 0x4d976aa0
Faulting module name: bengine.exe, version: 13.0.5204.0, time stamp: 0x4d976aa0
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000055aaf0
Faulting process id: 0xc88
Faulting application start time: 0x01cc10a5faf6ede9
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\bengine.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\bengine.exe

The LTO4 library was working really fine before we did the change to 2010 R3. All the other jobs like erase, lock, move etc. are working fine. I did check the firmware, flashed it, removed the library from Backup Exec and let Backup Exec detect it...but didnt work. The engine keeps crashing at the same byte, i did run the duplicate job for four times, every time the same errors at the same byte. it keeps stuck at 2.336.838.704,490 Byte.

Is it possible to check at which media set the error occurs? Could it be the catalog?

Any suggestions? Please help, any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hi Rahul,

the SCSI ID is unique and did work all the time...

I did install the latest symantec drivers with the assistant in Backup Exec.

According to this document there is no other device driver:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH158750&key=15047&basecat=DOWNLOADS&actp=LIST

    Thanks

  • If you just backup some data to each of the libraries, are the backups o.k.?

  • @Rahul

The faulting module in the technote lists the THEFH_LibCatalog.dll, but its the bengine.exe itself which is the faulting module in this case.

The technote refers to R1, there are currently no hotfixes out for R3 (Liveupdate told me so and i didnt find any on the homepage too). I guess the hotfixes listed in the technote is included in R3, right?

    @pkh

Yes, if i backup some data to each of the libraries, they seem to be ok. All other jobs like erase, move, lock etc. are working fine, too.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

we face exactly the same issue since the upgrade to Backup Exec 2010 R3. Can you reply the results of your case here, if there are any?

  • Hi,

there are no results, i did not open any case. Just saved my time, because i knew Symantec could not resolve this without tell me to rebuild the catalog etc. I did drop the duplicate job of this week and tried it with "new data" the next week. Since then its working fine. Sorry, but there“s nothing else i could tell you about this.

  • Hi,

  • Hi,

i dont know why, but we face the same issues again. Its like you wrote, they come back from time to time. I could bet, without changing anything, with the data from the next week everything will be fine.
