Backup Exec 2010 R3 - Recurring Backup failing

Afternoon all,

This is my first post and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a recurring backup failure I keep getting.

The Server is Server 2003 (SBS) SP2 and I am running Backup Exec 2010 R3 on it.

I run a daily "Full" backup which Overwrites the media and runs fine most days. However, every 3 weeks the job will fail with the error message (see attachment).

It appears to be related to the GRT aspect of the exchange backup but am unsure as to why it fails every 3rd week but is fine other than that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Dan

  • Hello Dan,

Are you backing up to disk or tape? If you are backing up to disk the GRT processing would take place on the Backup Exec server; however if you are backing up to tape the GRT processing would take place on the remote server.

Is there any other product that is backing up Exchange or the Server during the 3rd week that could be using Microsoft VSS or the Exchange VSS writer?

Is there any server maintenance happening on the SBS server during the time of backup?

According to the job log it seems during the backup the SBS server is running out of available memory; is there any Exchange errors or relevant Windows errors in the Event Viewer on the SBS server?

  • Hi William,

We are backing up to RDX tapes with no other product backing up Exchange or the server during the 3rd week.

There is daily server maintenance within Exchange for clearing items past the retention period. This is scheduled for between midnight and 4:00am

The first Error under Application Event log shows the following on 18/02/2014 at 05:19:26:
    Backup Exec Alert: Job Failed
(Server: "AY-SBS") (Job: "About You Full") About You Full -- The job failed with the following error: Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information.

The 2nd on 19/02/2014 at 20:30:05 shows the following which we get every 30 seconds for the next hour:
    Backup Exec Alert: Job Failed
(Server: "AY-SBS") (Job: "About You Full") About You Full -- The job failed with the following error: A communications failure has occurred with an Exchange Store resource.

Before this log there were some errors showing the following:

    Backup Exec Alert: Job Failed
(Server: "AY-SBS") (Job: "About You Full") About You Full -- The job failed with the following error: A communications failure has occurred with an Exchange Store resource.

The 3rd error log which relates to the error in BE on 19/02/2014 at 01:01:30 shows:
    Backup Exec Alert: Job Cancellation
(Server: "AY-SBS") (Job: "About You Full") The job was canceled because the response to a media request alert was Cancel, or because the alert was configured to automatically respond with Cancel, or because the Backup Exec Job Engine service was stopped.

Prior to this error there were again lots of the following:
An error occurred while processing a B2D command.
Changer: MoveMedium() Attempt to Mount Non-Empty Drive (B2DDrv1.1).  Error=1

  • Hey Dan,

At this stage I would run SymHelp on the SBS per the following tech document-"http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH204717" and open a support case with us; you can find the contact information here -"http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=contactsupport&key=15047"

When SymHelp asks you for which type of data to collect; select all data, check All Windows Application and System Event log Entries in the next window.

If you would like me to take a look myself you can PM me the SymHelp FTP link and I will let you know what I can find in a PM response.

  • Thanks William,

I will open a support case with Symantec but will also PM you the FTP link if you wouldn't mind taking a look.

    Thanks

    Dan

  • Hi William,

Couldn't paste the link in to here so have emailed it to you.

I've also logged a call with you guys (06127314)

    Regards
