Backup Exec 2010 R3 | Windows Server 2008 R2 | IBM Ultrium LTO3 Problem

If windows device manager does not recognize the drive, Backup Exec will never regonize it.

During boot, your Adapter normally shows the connected devices, does your tape unit show up there ?

As far I have read, Windows Server 2008 doesn't support anymore tape devices, leaving that for storage software like Backup Exec.

-This is not true. Your device should be first detected properly by the Operating System (even Win 2008) then only Backup Exec will be able to see the device and it gets the data from the Windows only.

So probably it seems that its the device issue.What you can try is to perform a Powercycle of the server and the tape device in following order:

-Shut down the server

-Shut down the Robotic Library

-Start the Robotic Library (after this wait for some time till the library is completed initialized and performs the self inventory)

-Start the server

Now check the Device Manager to see if the Library is correctly detected in the Device manager of Windows.

If then probably you should check with the hardware vendor.

...where is it attached too? I've seen stand-alone HP StorageWorks Ultrium drives not work on a SCSI card for whatever reason, but attaching them to a RAID controller worked.

Also, Ultrium drives (stand-alone) are self-teminating...check what happens if you remove the SCSI terminator.

I forgot to mention, the Ultrium is an internal drive. how will I shut down the internal drive?

When I shutdown the server it will also shutdown.

It's a SCSI Internal drive, connected to the scsci adaptor.

Then you just need to Reboot the Server...

What is important is that the Tape drive should be detected in the Windows Device Manager first before Backup Exec can see it..

I'd then suggest that you reseat the SCSI cable and make sure that it is securely connected.

If it still doesn't detect, check and see if you have any hardware alerts indicating a possible problem with the tape drive or SCSI card.

Also check the SCSI ID, make sure it is unique (not the same as the SCSI card).

Just the reboot won't show up the tape device in device manager
