Backup Exec 2012 confusion

I am trying very hard to accept the new methodologies with this upgrade but it is very difficult. It reminds me of Acronis' take on managing servers which I despise.

Groups: How do I control the order of the Jobs, I used to be able to specify an order for the servers and the pieces within them. I don't want multiple jobs trying to backup at the same time, I want them to occur one after another and in a specific order. When editing backups for a group you can not individualize each servers settings. This all really seems like I should ignore groups and focus on each server individually and try to form my own staggering of backups.

Esata drives: I duplicate to one after the backup to disk. I then rotate it each day. Why does 2012 refuse to recogonize it as a disk cartridge. I am using them like a usb drive. They are only in the system for a short time. I have about 30 of them I rotate through, will they all need to be provisioned?

I can't imagine the pain this would be for a large company.

After you create the jobs for a group of servers, you can edit each job to customise it for the server.

Your eSata disks are not recognised as Disk Cartridge Devices because they are not recognised in Windows as a device with removable media.

Also want to add the new UI is not friendly when using Remote Desktop on a T1.

You can individually edit group jobs after the creation. After creating the group jobs instead of clicking on the group, click on the server and edit the jobs.

Extra info: Also you can edit some properties against multiple servers withouth using groups by holding the CTRL key whilst clicking on servers and selecting more than one server.

Also with regards the Sata device rotation issues, please identify the make and model of the hardware and addtionallly I would recommend logging a formal support case so that a full investigation can be performed.

I had made a small group of my sql servers, created a backup off that group, uncheked entire system, then checked Microsoft SQL Server. The screen updates to Partially selected, but then every server says fully selected. This did work fine for my hyper-v group, with it only backing up hyper-v. Whats the deal?

Chaining through a script...why, when it was built in before?

The Esata is a simple thermaltake bay, to the motherboards esata port. Hitatchi HDS722020ALA330 drive, with JMicron JMB36X esata controller. I even tried changing policy for the drive to optimize for quick removal and it still would not let me select cartridge. (it also copied incredibly slow). For now I am using the Disk pool and setting up every single drive as disk storage (time consuming).

I really want to like this product but as of now its an extreme amount of work for initial setup. Once I am done I can see the possible benefits, but this was too big of a change at one time.

How do I change where all this data is stored: C:\program files\symantec\backup exec\data\hyper-v. Ran the C: drive out of space. Thanks for your prompt responses above too.

Can anyone help with that Hyper-v path? It is causing me lots of issues.

How do I change where all this data is stored: C:\program files\symantec\backup exec\data\hyper-v.

Have you tried looking to see if you can change the path using BEUtility? It's located in "Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec." I've never specifically had to change the Hyper-V path, but I know that when I had to change my catalogs path, I had to do it via BEUtility.

OK how do these disks show up in Windows Exploer (My Computer) - if they show up listed under "Devices with Removable Storage" then they should be confugurable as Cartridge media.

If they show up listed under "Hard Disk Drives" then for Backup Exec 2010 R2 and later we track by Drive GUID and you have to plug in all 40 of these drives and create a storage location on each one. Then when you insert a single disk it should go online with the other disks offline.

If applicable you could then assign them all to one or more pools and target the jobs appropriately and we will chose the device that is available at the time of the job. If you use this model you cannot target a specific drive, but rather the pool itself. Or you could also target the “Any Disk” pool as opposed to creating your own pool.

If they do not work as described with pools and when disconnected / inserted, then we probably need a support case to work out where it is going wrong.
