Backup Exec 2012: Festplattenspeicher wird nicht freigegeben

Guten Tag!

  • Backup Exec will overwrite data once the overwrite protection period is over.

Instead of appending configure backup jobs to overwrite.

  • where i can configure the jobs to overwrite data? In the job settings, i can only define the time, in which the data were kept. I attached a screenshot of the job settings...

  • Use "Biebehalten" option to configure the overwrite period in Job settings.

Besides that, you can also look in the Global settings :

    1. Click on the Backup Exec button

    2. Configurations and Settings - Backup Exec settings

    3. Go to Storage

    4. Here you can change the "Media overwrite protection level" and "Media overwrite options" as required. (See Global Settings for Storage)

Note: These are global Backup Exec settings and will apply to all your backup jobs.

    About Data Lifecycle Management:

Backup Exec uses data lifecycle management to automatically expire backup sets on disk and cloud storage. Backup Exec reclaims the storage space when the amount of time that you specify when you create the backup job expires. If backup sets are dependent on other backup sets, then Backup Exec does not expire the data until all expiration dates are reached. You do not need to manage media when you keep backup data on disk or cloud storage.

  • thanks for your answer, Bhavik!

In the job-settings are defined 4 weeks to protect the backup-files against overwriting. The global settings seem to be correct, but i found the setting "Datenträgergeräte" (Disk device?). There are set 14 days. Is it correct, that the Data are stored in my case 4 weeks (from the settings "Beibehalten" in the job-settings) plus 14 days (from the settings "Datenträgergeräte") and were released only after this time for overwriting? That would explain a lot...

    regards.

  •

This mainly applies to detachable storage devices (like removable USB). Here you can specify the number of days that the disk-based storage must be detached from the Backup Exec server before Backup Exec is limited to read-only operations.

This setting prevents Backup Exec from reclaiming disk space on any disk-based storage device if you re-attach the device after a specified number of days.

The default setting is 14 days.

When the number of days specified has passed for a detached disk storage device, Backup Exec is then limited to read-only operations on any disk storage device that you reattach until you manually change the setting on the disk storage properties.

So, in your case, if Biebehalten = 4 weeks. And if you are not going to use any detachable storage devices thn your data is going to be protected from being overwritten for 4 weeks.
  • okay -i don't use any detachable devices, so my data should being overwritten after 4 weeks. But there are still datas with date of April, the 19th 2012. So i think, i'll contact the technical support of Symantec.

anyway, thanks a lot for your help!

    kind regards,

    Florian

  • Backup Exec will overwrite information when required.

You can change the Global settings from :
"Overwrite scratch media before recyclable media contained in the target media set"

    to
"Overwrite recyclable media contained in the target media set before overwriting scratch media"

This will make sure your Old (i.e. overwrite expired) media sets are overwritten before the scratch media if required by Backup Exec.

  • Unfortunately, the setting "Overwrite recyclable media contained in the target media set before overwriting scratch media" is already set. I've attached a screenshot of these settings...

    kind regards,

    Florian
