Backup Exec 2014 / GRT of Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013

Group,

I am trying to determine if BE 2014 will do GRT backups of Exchange 2010 and also Exchange 2013.

Current environment:

  • Older server hardware to be retired later in the year.

  • Backup Exec 2012 v-ray edition / deduplication folder.

  • Exchange 2010 with GRT backups.

  • We have a current Sym support contract and I have the codes to install BE 2014.

Future environment:

  • New server, yet to be purchased.

  • Backup Exec 2014 v-ray edition / deduplication folder.

  • Exchange 2010 with GRT backups.

  • Exchange 2013 with GRT backups (after we build a new server and migrate to Exchange 2013).

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/library/BUSINESS/xCL/TECH217478/be_2014_scl.html#agent_for_applications_and_databases_compatibility-microsoft

The above SCL says this:

“To run Exchange 2010, the Backup Exec server must run on Windows 2008 SP2 or on a 64-bit Windows 2008 R2 computer on which the Exchange 2010 Management tools are installed.”

That means (to me) that I need 2008 on the new Backup Exec media server, not 2012.  But elsewhere in the above SCL I will need 2012 on the media server and a domain controller to do GRT of Active Directory.

So should I put 2008R2 or 2012R12 on the new server, yet to be purchased?

Thanks all!

  • Hi,

If you go according to that, the SCL would be right. However, I don't think it has been correctly updated.

Best bet is to see whether or not the Exchange 2010 management tools canbe installed on Server 2012 R2...if it can, then the SCL is wrong and I would suggest bringing this to the attention of Symantec so they can update. If not, then the SCL is correct and you'd have to go withServer 2008 R2 while migrating to the new version of Exchange.

    Thanks!

  • But elsewhere in the above SCL I will need 2012 on the media server and a domain controller to do GRT of Active Directory

This applies only if the DC itself is running Win 2012 R2. So, if the DC is running a Win 2012 R2 and you are performing GRT, then the Backup Exec media server also should be installed on a Win 2012 R2.

However, if your DC is Win 2008 or Win 2008 R2, such a requirement does not apply.

  • Thanks Craig and VJWare.

We ordered the new server with Server 2012 R2 and have MS Volume licenses for 2008 R2 as well.  Our plan is to use Win 2012 R2 and BE 2014 and see if we can to GRT of Exchange 2010.  If so we will move on.  If we need, we will wipe the new server and install Win 2008 R2 and BE 2014.

Later this year we will migrate to Exchange 2013 on Win 2012R2 - that is listed as supported.

Also later this year we will migratre our Domain Controllers from 2003 (ugh) to 2012 R2 (that's why I really want Win 2012 R2 on the new server).

    .

  • After i read few comment, to enable GRT for AD in 2012R2 i need master server running under 2012R2, and also applies for exchange 2013 that running under 2012R2.

Am I right? Is there any application/database that have to running in particular OS version to enable GRT?

    Best regards,

    Iqbal

  • Iqbal: Best to refer to the SCL for BE 2012/2014...this is going to indicate what OS you need to run for any particular application.

    Thanks!
