Backup Exec 9.1 cant catalog tapes that were backed up by different version of Backup Exec

Hello Support,

I’m in desperate need of help. I will begin with brief explanation of the issue I’m facing and I’m sure one of you geniuses has an answer to this.

I have backup exec 9.1 installed on server 2003 x32 SP2. What I’m trying to do is restore some of the older tapes with BE 9.1. I can inventory the tapes but when i try to run the catalog it just runs for hours without any errors. I inherited this server and have no experience with this software as we don’t use this anymore.

I believe at one point our company was using BE 8 and then upgraded to BE 9.1 and i think this is where the issue is. BE 9.1 for some reason can’t catalog the tapes. Since i have very minimal experience with this product i don’t know where to start.

All i want to do is pull the data off of the old tapes that may have been written in different version of the BE Veritas and restore it to a local driver. Once the data is re-stored i will use NTbackup to back the data to the LTO 5 tapes.

Can someone please help me out here? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Shad

  • Hi,

There was a setting in later versions to deselect/select about using on-tape catalogs. Check under the settings section and see if this was present in BE 9.1 and try again.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Craig,

Thanks for the reply but i cant seem to find the settings under tools. Could it be somewhere else? Or do i have to select the device or media tab and then look for this settings?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Craig,

I think i may have found the settings you were pointing me to.

Tools>Options>Under settings you can select Catalog>Use Storage media-based catalogs (This settins is checked currently). I will de-select this setting>inventory tape>run catalog and see how far i get with this.

I will let you know soon.

    Thanks,

  • ...that's the setting. I keep on forgetting the actual menu path to it, but that is correct!

    THanks!

  • Hi Craig,

Im able to catalog and restore the old tapes, WOW thank you so much for saving me tons of time. I called Symantec to see if they know the cause but the answer i got was "Product end of life". I wasnt happy with thier answer.

A simple setting can cause all this frustration. I should have posted my question few days ago when i started this and probably saved my self 6 hours but whatever im happy with the outcome now.

    Again thank you very much...

  • Hi Craig,

IM trying to catalog an older tape but i keep getting the below error.

452 - When accessing a new tape of a multivolume partition, the current block size is incorrect.

I looked at below post but i can't perform these steps as it will destroy the data i have on the tape im trying to catalog.

Do you know how to go about cataloging these tapes. With your instructions i was able to catalog other tapes but just not these one's.

    Here is what i did.

Yealry Tape 1 was inventoried> Cataloged and restored, worked like a charm.

Yearly Tape 2 was inventoried> but cant catalog it. It give me above error.

    Thanks,
