Backup Exec in virtual environment and VMware

Hello,

we have an ESXi 5 (Essentials Bundle) server with 2 virtual machines - one SBS 2011 and a Windows 2008 R2 Server.

On the SBS we have installed backup exec 2012 licenced via v-ray.

Now we try to backup the virtual machines via vmware. Backup of the second server works fine but on the SBS i got an error message

which says something like "backup exec cannot backup itself if its installed in a virtual machine"...

We want to backup via vmware to a backup2disk target on a nas.

Is there a clue whats wrong? Do i really need a physical backup server?

Regards,

Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

Although you can run BE on a media server that is virtualised, Symantec strongly recommend you run the application on a virtual server, primarily for instances like your issue above, as well as hardware connectivity requirements from a VMware perspective.

    Thanks!

EDIT: Check the TN below which recommends backing up the BE server using the RAWS agent, and not through VMware:
