Backup fileserver directly via SAS

Hi all,

Firstly my setup is as follows:

  1. One external tape library with 2 SAS LTO5 tape drives.
  2. One SAS tape drive is connected to backup server via SAS cable
  3. The other SAS tape drive is connected to fileserver via SAS cable.
  4. Both servers are connected to 2Gbps Ethernet network.
  5. Backup exec is installed on the backup server, backup exec agent is installed on fileserver.
  6. I have installed the additional tape drive license option on the backup server.

What I need to know is whether it is possible to use the backup server to control the backup of fileserver i.e control the scheduling of backups etc BUT have the fileserver backup agent write the backup to the tape drive directly via the connected SAS cable rather than transferring all the data over the network to the backup server and writing it to tape from there.

Thanks in advance

Simon

  • No, this will never work.

IF it will work, you need to have Backup Exec (fulll version) installed on the fileserver.
But, I am not sure if you can share a library via SAS !
(Maybe you need the SSO, san shared storage option for this, but I suggest to try first).

  • ...it won't work with SAN SSO and you'd have wasted money on the license. SAN SSO specifically targets SAN-attached devices...locally attached SAS tape drives aren't supported for this as the other server won't be able to see the robotics. Where 1 job will succeed, the other (where the server cannot see the robotics) will immediately fail.

Attach the library to 1 server and create 2 backup jobs...1 for each server. That way you get to utilise the 2 drives at your disposal. Don't forget you need an additional LEO license in order to activate the second tape drive...

  • Thanks guys,

That helps, so if I want to try it by installing backup exec directly onto fileserver and effectively making it a second media server does anyone know on how many servers you can install BE using the same license?

    Cheers

    Simon

  • Only one, the license agreement does not allow to install the same license key on a second server.

For all other servers you will need a remote agent.

  • If you need to have a second media server then you need a second BE licence.  If you just want to back it up, then you would need a RAWS licence.
