Backup Job Hanging

    Hi,

I am using Backup Exec 11d 7170 SP2 on my Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard to backup multiple systems, one of which is a Mac server with Mac OS X Server 10.4.9.  My problem is this:  The backup job will run backing up nearly 1.5 TB of data (about 12 hours) and then hangs.  Sometimes it will fail and the reason in the job log is that the remote agent either stopped working or could not be contacted.  When it hangs, I check to see if the remote agent is running and it is.  Obviously, restarting the remote agent causes the backup set to be stopped unexpectedly and the job then fails.  Letting it run, well, it'll run indefinitely.  When I choose to cancel the job, it takes nearly 3 hours for the job to cancel.  There will be a byte count, but the job will have failed.  Has anyone dealt with this and know what to do?
  • The backup server was updated to BE 12.5 and the new remote agent was installed on the Mac server.  The issues I was experiencing have been resolved.
  • Well, I've had a new wrinkle to this issue occur.  For the last couple of days, when I restart the remote agent on the Mac server, then cancel the job on the media server, almost immediately the job will complete successfully or with exceptions.

I'm backing up another Mac server, running OS X 10.3.9,  in a separate job which is also hanging.  I tried the little fix mentioned above and the cancel has been pending for about an hour and a half.  I've tried stopping the remote agent and waiting a while, but the job is still "running".  Started it back up, in hopes of the job to miraculously resume, but so far I have been miserably disappointed.  I have roughly 990 GB backed up.  I am using the BEWS_11D.7170 remote agent for Linux, Unix and Macs.  Any ideas?
  • Here is an update:

The Mac OS X 10.3.9 server was wiped away and rebuilt.  The remote agent was installed and the backup jobs are currently completing with exceptions.  The jobs are set to not use AOFO,  never back up files in use, and are set to use modified time.

The Mac OS X 10.4 server is still experiencing job hangs when everything in the selection list for that server is selected with the same settings as above.  This is after I rebuilt the selection list.  I would like to add that the trick I mentioned doesn't work anymore.  I removed about 13 directories over two partitions on the XServe RAID from the backup because the owner said they only needed to be backed up weekly or monthly and the jobs began to complete with exceptions, at first, but now the full job has been running in excess of 85 hours.  I backed up the omitted directories separately with no problems, save for one.  I found the file on which that job was hanging, omitted it and ran it again with no problems.  I backed up the "problem" file successfully as well.  But for some reason, backing up everything all together doesn't work.  I could break the job up into different jobs, but then I already have jobs not even running because I've run out of resources to which to back up.  I've been working with a Symantec technician on the issue, and so far they can't figure it out either.  I really can't say that this is fixed.
