Backup job taking 12.5 hours to complete...

I am running Windows Small Business Server 2003 with backup exec 10 (rev 5520) for sbs. The Drive is an internal Seagate STT34010A and has been replaced less than a year ago.

I have two backup Jobs that run nightly and seem to keep taking longer and longer to run.

The first job is backing up around 17 GB and for some reason is taking 12.5 hours to complete. In the last two weeks i ran into some problems with failed jobs so i ended up changing some configurations. I reinstalled/repaired backup exec and recreated the jobs. This didint do anything for the problem.

Im getting the feeling that this drive is going bad again, there seem to be some items in event viewer that point in that direction.

It would be a big help if someone had some ideas.

Thanks.

im going to do the cleaning tape first - let it run a night.
then dell diagnostics - see what it comes up with.
if nothing - full uninstall/reinstall of backup exec, tape drive and make new backup jobs.

ill let you know my progress.
  • I updated the tape drive drivers yesterday.

Last nights backups failed within 3 minutes with the following error code.

"There was an error processing the on tape catalogs"

no reason given for it. No problem with disk space.
