Backup network share without Windows Agent

Hi,

We are getting error while trying to backup some shares on Windows servers that do not have the Windows Agent installed. Our software is the Backup Exec 2010.

The jobs are returning the error below, indicating some problems related to connectivity that do not exist.

Final error: 0xe0000f02 - The media server could not connect to the remote computer. The remote computer may not exist on the selected subnet. Try an alternative network interface, or allow Backup Exec to choose any available network interface.

Final error category: Resource Errors

We have red some posts/ articles, but haven't find conclusive answers. Is it possible to backup remote Windows servers without de Windows Agent installed on Backup Exec 2010?

Tks,

Marcelo Barros

  • Although we have only one NIC and only one subnet configured, it was necessary “force” the use of a specific NIC on the job configuration (Settings -> Network and Security). By anyway, the BE was not finding the destination server without this configuration. For me, it seems a bug.

Now the jobs are completing with the status “Completed with exceptions ”.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

  • Add the Remote server under the user defined selections in the selection list using the IP address and check if Shares are displayed and backup from there.

    Hope this helps...

Yes.  You can backup the shared directories, but not as mapped drives.  Mapped drives are associated with an online session and BE run as a batch job.  You must use the UNC name to backup your shared directories.

Do note that you would still require a remote agent licence to backup that server, even though you did not install the remote agent.  This is from a licensing/legal standpoint.

  • Dear Pkh,

Could you explain what exactely you want to say.

"Do note that you would still require a remote agent licence to backup that server, even though you did not install the remote agent.  This is from a licensing/legal standpoint "

    Thanks in advance.

  • The Symantec Licensing Policy is that all remote server OS machines and all desktop OS machines Vista or later require a RAWS license.

  • Hi Pkh and Ken,

    Thanks for your reply.

Although we are still have RAWS license available the BE is not enabling the backup of remote shares. Does it need any previous configuration?

Also, how can we track license use in BE?

Is it possible to know for how long one RAWS without will works?

You got to go through the trouble-shooting steps suggested above to see what is the problem.

Also, how can we track license use in BE?

You can check the number of licences that you have by going to Tools ---> Install Options and Licence keys...

Is it possible to know for how long one RAWS without will works?

You can use RAWS without a licence on trial which will lasts for 60 days.
