Backup NFS Exports with Backup Exec 2012

Hello Guys,

i want to Backup NFS Exports from my Netapp with Backup Exec 2012.

BE 2012 runs on Windows Server 2008 R2.

I've alreade installed the role of the nfs client on the Server, so i can mount the nfs exports with a drive letter sucessfully.

In Backup Exec, if try to backup the server, i cant see the mounted nfs export, just the local drives and systemstate.

Is it possible to mount the nfs exports directly into BE?

Thank you for your answers.

Greetings

  • We only support share level backups via unc paths - as such if it is a share but not accessible over UNC we will not support it.

We only support drive letters that are either: Internal, SCSI, SAN or USB attached as such I suspect this NFS Export is not covered by that either.

We support the backup of the Netapp volume via NDMP - however if this NFS Export is anything like a LUN then this will see the whole export as one large file so probably won't achieve what you want.

As such gut feeeling is we do not support your configuration.

BTW I think another customer asked this recently (with virtual machines in an NFS Export) as was told more or less the same thing (excepting slight differences for the VMware complication)

  • Click on the BE button at extreme top left of the console and then Configuration Settings - Backup Exec settings...Choose Network & Security and is "enable selection of user shares' checked ?

And then from the Backup & Restore tab, add a file server and choose the IP address of host server...see if the mounted nfs appears or not...

  • Thank you for your answer,

i tested your solution, but it did not work. I dont see the mounted nfs at the selection list of sources.

  • Thought so :(  I have usually seen NFS mounts residing on a linux server and using the RALUS agent to back them up...let me check a bit further on this...

  • While I know this can be done with BE2010 (I have not tried it with 2012), NDMP is a whole lot faster for backups...

  • Thank you.

Is it possible and supported to install a RALUS on one of the Linux Systems, an mount the NFS exports from the NetApp to backup the data of the exports?

  • Not sure what country you are in, but the NDMP option costs less than $1000 USD, and works well with NetApp.  Often I've sold the license to customers in the $600-$800 range due to their Symantec points level.

Why wouldn't you want to NDMP a filer?  Backups are significantly faster in most cases than NFS

  • We bought an RALUS Agent that is now installed on that system.
