Backup Performance

Good Morning everybody!

Just got some problems with our Backup. We´re using BE 2010 R2 on a Server 2008 R2 x64.

The first problem got solved as itself(i think) :-) I have added some Jobs to backup several volumes on a netapp FAS3140. Everything works fine, till the Job starts to backup a cifs share. The performance increases to max. 40 MB/min. All volumes before were backup´d in a speed of 5 GB/min or more.

Then i wondered some employees could access excel files on this cifs share (!) very very slowly. This problem was solved with the deinstallation of the MS KB 2501584 (Office File Validation Add-In). This only concerns network access. The strange thing is, that no Office product is installed on our Backup Server, but the performance (after a few days, 3 or 4 i think) was normal/satisfactory.

Someone got this problem too?!

But now to my second - not yet solved - problem!

I want to backup up a Windows Server 2008 x64 with the normal agent for Windows Servers. We have a three of them, all with the same software, local disks (not NetApp LUNs) and all with the same update status (Windows). Just updated the agents, updated the internal NICs, but the performance is about 5 MB/min. The normal speed is about 300 - 500 MB/min for this servers. 2 (!) of them have the performance issues, one is about the normal speed!

Could someone agree with this:-?

Thank you very much!

  • Since the installation of R3 yesterday, our problem concerning the poor backup performance of a 2008 x64 R2(!) Server has been solved!

    Greetings

  • Hi!

Yesterday i changed the TCP Settings for the NIC and deactivated IPv6 on the last server of the three (only server that goes well :-) ).

And today i wondered why i got not as many mails from backup exec i got usually. The Problem concerning poor performance now exists on the third server too!! I changed all the values for IPv6 back, enabled it and tomorrow i´ll take a look if it works.

Someone would call me from symantec support...but till now nothing happened (since yesterday:-))

If someone got any other idea, i would be pleased for posting it;-)

  • Finally, i got called from the support.

The poor performance depends - probably - on the new release of Backup Exec 2010. The version R3 must be installed to backup a server 2003 R2 or 2008 R2 properly.

Like he said it don´t depends on the IPv6! This has nothing to do with it....[hmmm...]

I will check that - as soon as they fixed their downloads :-) - and come back to that.
