Backup Policy Media Set

Hi

I need help regarding policy creation in BE. I am taking SQL database backup of total size of 160 Gb with a data growth of approx 670 Mb per day. I have assigned a 500 Gb of a Storage Spce to the BE Server. The policy set that is defined are Daily Incremental and Weekly Full. The Media Set Defined are

Daily Incremental: Overwrite Protection Period: 4 weeks and Append Period: 0 Days.

Weekly Full: Overwrite Protection Period: 4 weeks and Append Period: 1 weeks.

Now the problem is with that of the Incrmental Backup. Daily the Incremental Backup is creating a new Backup Set with the same size instead of appending the new data in the first backup set. Can you please help me out in configuring the policy in such a way that I have only one Incremental Backupset and daily appended data will get appended to that backup set.

Please let me know how can i configure the same and also how can i overwrite the backup after every 4 weeks.

Thanks

  • It is always recommended not to append disk backups. Because there is no use in appending data when it comes to disk backups.

But if you wish to do, configure incremental media set with 28 days append period and 1 day / 23 hours OPP. And change "job should start as" setting in your incremental backup job to Append to media.

  • For disk storage you should not append.  There is no advantage to appending your data.  You should always overwrite.  If you upgrade to BE 2012, you cannot append to disk storage.

You can reduce the amount of disk space allocated,  Go to your B2D folder property and make sure that you do NOT check the allocate max size parameter.

  • Backups are appending coz you have set the append period as Zero for the daily Incremental media

set. Set appropriate value for the append period. Also any specific requirement to retain incremenatal

backups for 4 weeks. 1 or 2 weeks retention is sufficient for incremental backups.

Configure backups to overwrite so that once retention period is over older backup sets will get

    overwritten by the new ones.

  • I have configured the policy as suggested by you. I will update you the status after the backup runs today as scheduled.
