Backup sometimes fails on connection

Hi all,

We've a Backup Exec 12 SBS (Windows SBS 2003 x86) server running with two additional servers.

  1. SQL (Windows Server 2008 R2 x64)
  2. Hyper-V/File (Windows Server 2008 R2 x64)

The Backup server backups shares from both servers (because the remote agent of BE12 doesn't work on 2008 R2).
Now and then the backup fails on one of these servers with the error:

e00084af - The directory or file was not found, or could not be accessed.

V-79-57344-3844 - The media server was unable to connect to the Remote Agent on machine SQLSERVER.
The media server will use the local agent to try to complete the operation.
WARNING: Media servers cannot completely protect remote Windows-based servers or workstations unless the Backup Exec Remote Agent is installed and running on each remote Windows-based server or workstation to be protected. Data loss can occur if the Remote Agent is not running while backing up remote Windows-based computers.

Please refer to the documentation or online help for more information.

Unexpected end of backup set encountered on IBM 1.

In the eventlog we see the error:

An attempt to establish a network connection to \\SQLSERVER\SQL Backup failed.
 Error: 1203

The day before and after the backup goes fine. I can't find any other error in the eventlog of the backup or sql server. All seems ok. Network connection is also up at the time.

Anyone with more debugging tips/suggestions? I don't know where to look next.

Thanks in advance!

  • The whole problem is because you don't have the RAWS installed on the 2 servers as 12.0 is not compatible to backup ws 2008 R2. You are backing up the shares on both the servers and that is the reason it gives you these error message. Also you are tyring to backup the sql files in the share and that is not at all a good idea in case your sql crashed or needs to be restored as it will not backup your ldf and mdf files without having the sql agent installed or atelast you need to have the raws installed to have a flat file backup of your sql.

To get these issues resolved upgrade to latest BE 2010.

  • As sazz says, you will need to upgrade to backup the remote computers

I think that v12.5 is  a free upgrade from v12.0, and v12.5 with SP will protect a 2008R2 server
