Backup to Disk is not working. (Lots of errors)
We have Backup Exec 12.5 and to be honest, it never really worked right. Getting a sucessfull backup was always a crapshoot. Now we have one of our B2D folders not working, and I even tried deleting it to recreate it, but when I try to move the jobs to it, it says "An error occured while retargeting Nightly Incremental - LAN - Win2003 Systems". So I can't even delete it. But let's rewind and I'll tell you what's happening. First off, I noticed that a Nightly Incremental job was queued for over 515 hours. I stopped the job. It was destined to go to the B2D folder we are having the problem.
We have 2 Backup 2 Disk folders. One is an EMC Cellerra SAN with a 2TB CIFS store carved out, and that works 70% of the time. We'll call this san1, but we won't reference it often because it is working.
The other is an Adaptec SNAP Server (1TB) which is also connected via CIFS (\\snap2\backup). That used to always work, but this guy right now is giving us a hard time. Our incremental jobs go to the SNAP server, and our Full backups go to the EMC Cellerra. I've noticed a lot of red in the job log for the month of may, and the pattern is they were all jobs directed to SNAP2, which is the name of our Snap server. So I go over to the Devices tab and I right click in Snap2 and do an inventory. Every time I do an Inventory the job fails. Here are the last 5 inventory attempts:
Inventory Library 00014 - e0008212 - Library error - invalid element address.
Inventory Library 00016 - e0008212 - Library error - invalid element address.
Inventory Library 00017 - e0008115 - Physical Volume Library Drive or Robot paused, offline, or disabled.
Inventory Library 00018 - e0008115 - Physical Volume Library Drive or Robot paused, offline, or disabled.
Inventory Library 00019 - e0008115 - Physical Volume Library Drive or Robot paused, offline, or disabled.
Now I followed some other suggestions from Symantec's forums and/or knowlegebase or Experts Exchange, and I've tried the following things:
Browsed out to the network store, in this case \\snap2\backup. Renamed Changer.cfg to oldChanger.cfg and Folder.cfg to oldFolder.cfg. Went back into the Devices tab in BE 12.5 and made the Snap2 B2D folder online. Right clicked and did an inventory (#18 above). Restarted the Backup Exec Services. Came back in and tried another inventory (#19 above).
Another suggestion was to go into the Backup-to-Disk Properties "Advanced" tab and uncheck "Auto detect settings and "Buffered reads".
When you do any of these changes, try to inventory the B2D folder, it immediately errors and shows Offline. However snap2 can be pinged and I can also go to the share create and delete a file or folder in it.
I'm not really sure what to do at this point. A lot of online reaserch points to SCSI tape drives, and their SCSI ID's and/or tape drivers. However this is just a NAS unit with an IP Address, that used to always work. I'm not sure what may of changed to break it. I can still connect to the NAS unit via SMB share, FTP or it's HTTP web gui. It appears as if the hardware is working correctly. Our other B2D folder actually shows a lot of files in the Devices tab "B2D000389" for example. That folder does inventory without error. The Snap2 B2D folder simply does not show anything in Backup Exec, or inventory. However it works fine from Windows.
I have a bunch of Backup Exec Event log errors also. Let me post them here:
And it's those event logs repeated again and again and again for every time an Inventory is attempted on the B2D folder.
