Backup to Tape Drive on Another Server

Hi,

 

We have two servers configured as below:

Server A

Windows Server 2008 x64

Exchange

 

Server B

Windows Server 2008 x86

Tape Drive connected

 

We are considering purchasing Backup Exec 2012 to be able to backup both servers to tape drive, including active directory and exchange. Our initial plan was to install the media server onto Server B and backup everything to the tape drive there. We realised we cant do this as its 32bit and it cannot backup Exchange that way.

Are we able to install the media server on Server A and then backup everything to the tape drive connected to Server B? Or if we install the media server on both machines will this work?

    You need to install Backup Exec on a server which has a Tape Drive connected.

    If you want to backup Exchange 2010 then your media server has to be Win 2008 SP2 64 bit or

    Win 2008 R2.

    Ideally, the media server is referenced as the one which has the tape drive locally attached to it...You can use a tape drive attached on another server using the Shared Storage Option, however there are certain pre-requisites for using this option...

    And yes, you can install BE on both servers....Prolly use Server A exchange backups to disk & use Server B as backups to local attached tape drive, however this would involve 2 BE media server licenses....

    Can you explain to me more about the Shared Storage Option please? Do you have any links to literature on it at all?

    SAN SSO uses a fibre-connected tape library to share the tape drives and robotics amongst multiple servers. It assumes the following:

    1. Your backup server has FC connectivity to a SAN.

    2. Your library is SAN-attached.

    3. The servers you want to backup are also SAN-attached and have full versions of BE installed.

    4. You have licensed the SAN SSO option.

    Without the above, SAN SSO won't work. You can't share a SCSI/SAS-attached drive either...
