Backups incomplete

 Hello,
We have a server that seems to hardly ever complete a full scheduled backup. We have to come in every day and change tapes then re-insert tapes for verify. Any suggestions on this..

  •  Your tapes are filling up. what you can do is,
    1. make sure compression is working
    2. reduce the amount of data being backed up
    3. use bigger tapes / higher capacity drives
    4. invest in a robotic tape library

I think there is no other option

    Hope this helps

  • If it is asking for more tapes then your options are
    1) Buy a library (or a tape drive with a larger capacity) so that it can find another tape (or user teh laregr capacity) without human intervention
    2) If you already have a library sort out your media sets so that overwriteable media is available
    3) If you don't have a library and can't buy one, then reduce the amount of data being backed up (i.e. delete old data, create selections list that don't backup fiels that never chaneg etc) NOTE: Be careful with this one as depending on how the selection list is created to limit what you backup, it can stop you backing up new folders created at a later time.
  • It seems your tapes are not enough in terms of capacity to store the data being backed up. So, getting tapes with higher capacity, or reducing the size of data backed up would be an option for you.

Please mark it a solution, if this is useful.
    Thanks
  • Hi Saleem,

Does it state the backups are incomplete, or is it simply because the tape is ejected and you have to put it in again for the verify option?
If it's 1...make sure AOFO is turned on for that job, and that it's installed on each of the servers you want to back up. This can be done with a push install from your media server. BEWS will state a backup is incomplete if there were open files it couldn't get a lock on.

If it's 2...There is a setting under Tools --> Options --> Backup called Verify after backup. If you don't want this to run, deselect it. All it does is check that the data on your tape is consistent with the data on the disk. The job will then eject the tape, and complete.
    Laters!
