BE 2012 Backup Stalled on Insufficient Disk Space

Hi Guys,

Any ideas what might be going on here…

So I come in this morning and the backup from last night is still running. It is saying not enough disk space on the USB Drive.

I go to the USB Drive and check out the backup sets on the drive. There is a backup set there from the 12/04 which has a expiration date of the 19/04 (It is the 20/04 today in Australia, for those who are reading this elsewhere). So what it looks like has happened is the Backup Set is still protected even though the date said it shouldn't. The only thing I can think of is the system date of the machine is incorrect, but I checked that and it is set correctly.

Is there anything that I can try that you guys can think of?

Thanks in Advance

Peter

  • Just for info of others and bear in mind this still needs confirmation as this may not be the cause of Peter's problem

DLM will not groom the last complete recovery point chain (i.e. full + Incrementals) for a given resource as such if the set that appeared to have expired was part of the last recovery point chain then it will not be deleted with the result that you may run out of space if this has not been planned into your storage strategy.

  • But the Drive is out of free space so it has no choice but to overwrite media..

EDIT: Sorry i have no idea how to upload an image without it being cut off!! Hopefully that attachment should work.

  • Collin, I am running no incremental/differential backups. The USB Drive is on a weekly rotation, so gets detached for just under 7 days before the server see's it again.

I have a technical support case open with Symantec re this (no response yet) so feel free to pick this one up :) I can give you the job number if your able to...

  • It also depends on whether the storage on the USB disk is defined as Disk Storage or Disk Cartridge Device.  The management of the former is handled by DLM, whereas the latter is handled by media sets.

  • It is handled by DLM and the retention period is just configured in the backup job under storage.

Edit: Sorry i read the question again and now understand the different between cartridge and disk storage.

  • Try leaving the disk online for a day and see whether the DLM grooming frees up any disk space.

  • I just got off the phone with Symantec Tech Support. He checked it out and couldn't really figure out what was going on so just deleted the backup set. He is going to get back to me on Monday about it.

Will let you know what he says..

  • I believe Collin may have the answer... 'G' drive was part of a selection list/backup job but got removed for various reasons. So chances are that particular backup set of 'G' on Thursdays USB Drive would have been the last one (All other backup sets of G on Wednesday, Tuesday etc would have been recycled successfully), and as Collin said, DLM will not recycle this.

I believe there may be some further investigation into this issue and suggested that it would be a good idea that BE adds some sort of text in the "Reason to Retain" Field as currently there appears to be way of knowing whether a backup set is the last one in the Recovery Point Chain...
