BE Server license

Hi, our customer plans to buy BE. They have 21 Windows servers (including the backup server) in total. They need to back up the filesystem of all these servers. They want to know how many licenses they need to buy.

My question is:

With the BE server license, can BE server back up itself? If yes, does it mean in this case they just need to buy 20 agent for Windows licenses + 1  BE server license?

    Yes you are right 

    You need core backup exec license and 20 Remote agent for Windows license. You dont need a Windows agent license for the backup exec server as core license is sufficent to backup itself.

    If the other servers have applications or databases, like Exchange or SQL databases and these need to be backed up, then you would need to buy 1 Agent for Applications and Databases licence for each application/database on each server.  With the  Agent for Applications and Databases licence, you also get a remote agent licence so you can backup files on these servers without any further licences.

    Since you mention you are planning to buy BE, then BE 15 is the latest version available. It includes a new licensing model called as "Capacity Edition" and "Capacity Edition Lite".

    This is a very simplified model as you pay only for the amount of front end data which is getting backed up. And the Capacity Edition includes the Backup Exec server license and all agents & options.

    If you don't care about data management and just want to back up some directories (like non-windows shares) then you can also just do file target directory backup which doesn't require an agent for windows.

    However, if you want to actually be able to restore those servers and not the data you can grab from data shares on the servers, you will need a remote agent license.
