BE2012 B2D Exchange 2007 GRT restore empty

I've been having some trouble lately with the GRT enabled backups on my exchange 2007 box. The backups are successful (backup to disk), the index and catalog report successful but when I go to restore, there's nothing under the storage group.

I've tried splitting the OS backup from the mail store backup, changing the location of the GRT folders to different spindles, different logon accounts, updating the agent, manually recataloging ... nothing seems to work.

To make this more confusing and also to verify that I have things setup correctly, the second storage group which is much smaller and used for public folders can see exchange data to restore randomly.

Things I haven't tried, reinstalling BE2012, copying backup files to another BE2012 server and cataloging (if that's possible).

I've been letting this slide but a user deleted a bunch of email and we need to pull from backup. My options are to get this working or restore to a recovery group and copy the files out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

  • Hello,

Do you have a Backup Exec mailbox that is active ( at least one message sent and recieved) and not hidden from the GAL?

Look over this document and make sure you have all the requirements to restore in place http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH51740

  • Do you see an IMG folder inside your storage device?

If yes cut the VDB.txt and VDB folder to the desktop

Reinventory the backup to disk folder

Catalog the backup to disk folder

Check if you see the restore selections

  • dibiddle,

Yes, you should run an inventory and then catalog.

  • Do you have the Exchange 2007 management tools installed on the Backup Exec media server ?

Also make sure to add the Backup Account to the Exchange Organization Administrators group.

  • Thank you lmosla, that helped! I did not have an active mailbox for the backup exec account so I set that up.

I ran the syamtec support tool as well & found the backup service account wasn't a local admin so I fixed that as well.

I did a test backup of the smaller storage group and that was successful after a long delay updating the catalog.

A full test will be doing a full backup of the first storage group tonight.

Question, is it possible to re-catalog the backups that were successful but didn't catalog / index correctly?

  • dibiddle,

Yes, you should run an inventory and then catalog.

  • I found an article: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH125928

it appears to have similar instructions. I tried sending the vdb file & folder to the recycle bin and running the restore process again, didn't seem to work.

I am running the inventory and catalog process on one of my disk storage devices (storage > right click volume > inventory & catalog). The progress is pulling exchange source, directory, name, etc.

    This looks very hopeful!
