BE2012: Demystify Schedule Options for Duplicate Jobs
Can someone help me understand this so I'm not drawing any inaccurate conclusions? The information in the Help and Admin Guides are pretty vague and don't go into much in the way of explanation.
What I'm slightly confused about is the Source field options: I have 1) All Backups, 2) Most Recent Full Backup and 3) Selected Backups. Linked jobs are easy to understand: they only run when the job it's linked to is run. If I don't want certain jobs to run immediately (it's more efficient if I can schedule them to run in the daytime, 12hrs later for instance), I understand I can schedule them, but I'm a bit unclear as to what I should expect from the three scheduling options.
For instance, what does "All Backups" mean?
a) All backup sets are duplicated (so if I have 12 weeks of retention, do 12 weeks worth go to tape?)
b) Only the most recent backup set of any of the associated tasks (full v. incremental, etc) are duplicated (single backup set at any given instance)
c) Similar to a), but only all backup sets since the last time the task was run (so maybe all the backup sets for the entire week, if this task is scheduled weekly)
Similar question for the selected backups as well....
I think I know the answer, so it seems like a silly question, but I just want to know for sure that my expectations aren't way over in left field.
As far as I know all backups means duplicate all full, differential or incremental stages that have not already been duplicated.
Most recent full backup is just the last full backup.
Selected backups lets you pick full or incremental or differential stage but it will still duplicate all that have not already been duplicated.
Bear in mind you can have more than one duplicate stage, so if you want to duplicate the full with a specific set of settings that is for instance not the same settings that the incremental duplicate needs you can create a second duplicate stage.
