BK2010 R3 - VMware ESXi 5 & vCenter Server 5

Does anyone know if the latest version of BK2010 R3 (fully patched) is able to support VMware ESXi 5.0 & VMware vCenter Server 5.0

If I'm reading the BK2010 Software Compatability List correctly.  vSphere 5.0 is supported (ESXi 5.0), but vCenter Server 5.0 is not.  I'm hoping this isn't the case.  Because the only way you can manage ESXi 5.0 hosts is with vCenter Server 5.0.

  • Hi all

I have had internal confirmation that vCenter 5 is supported and the SCL will be edited to reflect this in next few days. Apparently we will also support the Linux Based vCenter that can run inside a Virtual Machine as well.

Thanks for pointing out this omission in the SCL.

  • Just for info I am in process of checking internally on this question, but may have to wait for the right people to be available (due to timezone differences)

  • i understand where you are coming from as vcenter sits above vsphere 5 in all VMWare product diagrams.

But basically , it would be weird for symantec to not support vcenter as part of its vsphere support.

there area bunch of forum questions about using vsphere 5 and vcenter and not one symantec employee has said "vcenter5 is not supported"

    did find this though.

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/out-now-backup-exec-2010-r3-v-ray

"Backup Exec’s V-Ray technology also includes the new virtual machine validator feature to allow administrators to easily resolve backup issues by validating the recoverability of VMware backups through integration with the VMware vCenter™ Server administration console."

  • It could very well be a documentation error on the SCL...  It happens a lot within Symantec, where a new feature is created and not all relevant documents are updated.

The API's are still there, so I would point to vcenter, and try a test backup.

  • The Software Compatibility List (SCL) should be updates shortly to reflect these changes.
