Byte Count Vs Data Size

Hi, I am using Symantec Backup Exec 2010. I have an enquiry and hope any of you guys could help me with it.

At the Job Monitor >> Job History section, it shows the byte count for each respective job.

At the Media >> Media Item section, it shows the used capacity, data & compression ratio.

I understand that used capacity and data should be different due to compression ratio. However, why is byte count different from data?

  • The byte count refers to the actual data processed by the job, but it does not correspond to the amount of data backed up.  For example, if you are doing an incremental job, the byte count can be greater than the actual data backed up because not all the files processed are backed up.

  • The byte count  is the amount of data that is been backed and is not the physical space used by you tape or drive. Is the byte count more or less that the actual data size ? I hope the caluctions is fine

  • Thanks, Twinkle.

The byte count is more than actual data size.

I understand that used capacity is physical space used by tape

But what does data refers to? Is it equivalent to byte count?
