Check if Client Side Deduplication is workig

Actually I am trying to Backup a virtual (VMware 5.1) Windows 2012 Standard Server with RAWS. The Backup Exec Server 2014 and Deduplication Vault is running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.

On the Win2k12 Client the Backup Exec Agend is installed. On the Dedup Storage Client-Side Dedup is enabled. I have created a RAWS backup job in Backup Exec only with the Win2k12 Client Server selected. In the backup job there is direct access to the dudup storage enabled.

After trying the backup for more than 3 times, it seems that the backup is not running with client side dedup. Since Backup Exec is always backing up all the files so the backup window is realy slow.

How can I check if client side backup is working?

The Agend for Windows is making only 6-8% of CPU usage.

  • I remember the job log does contain the information. Under the Device & Media section of the job log, it should mention the client machine as the device hostname.

  • If client side dedup is enabled and for some reason it is not possible then we write an entry in the job log to state so.

I know you have stated you are doign a RAWS backup so my next comment does not apply to your problem, but please be aware that backups with the VMware agent never do client side because in this situation the process responsible for the backup is the beremote process on the media server

  • I am not able to find the entry in the logs? In what section should be the entry?

  • It is only an error condition so assuming you see a deduplication ratio and have correcty enabled Client side then it is doing client side.

Of course if you have not correctly enabled client side, then it not working won't be an error condition so won't be reported either.

Sorry I don't have an example of a failed job log to confirm which section it might appear in.

  • No Error. But for me I don't see any reducing of the backup window between Client Side and Backup Server Side Dedup.

So I am still not sure if Client Side Dedup is realy working for me.

  • Hmm... is there no way to see if Cliend Side is realy used?

  • When using client-side dedupe, the data bypasses the media server and directly goes from the client machine to the dedupe device. This is one way to check if client-side dedupe is actually being used or not.

  • Since Backup Server and Dedup Storage is on the same mashine how can I check this?

  • I remember the job log does contain the information. Under the Device & Media section of the job log, it should mention the client machine as the device hostname.

  • Thx. Under Job Log in Section "Device and Media Information" while using Client Side Dedup there is written the Device Hostname of the Client.

While using Server Side there is no entry with name Device Hostname.

So Client Side Dedup is working but for me with no real minimization of the backup window.
