Configuring disk backup

I have BE 2014 and I'm backing up data to disk. I have full backup running every friday and incremental backup running monday to thursday. I have configured to keep full backups for 4 weeks and incrementals for 1 week. I'm unsure should I keep more incrementals than 1 week. I think that with these settings that I'm using now I can go back 7 days with incrementals and after that one week at a time.

I'm also running backups from virtual machines running in Hyper-V host. Should I skip virtual disk files from disk when selecting data to backup? I have now selected all VM's from backup selections under "Microsoft Hyper-V\Virtual Machines"

  • If these VHD are not part of any VM's, then you can either select them or not.  However, watch the SDR light.  If it goes off, then these are deemed to be necessary to recover the host.

  • How long you keep your backup sets is a function of your company's requirement.  You are the best person to answer your question.  There is no point in me suggestion that you change the retention period because I don't know what is required.  Bear in mind, when you increase the retention period, more disk space is required.

No.  You cannot exclude virtual disks from your VM backups.  They must be backed up in their entirety.

  • Do you mean that I should select those VHDX files from Hyper-V host to backup too?

Now my selection list looks like this. I have selected Hyper-V and VM's under it but I have not selected separately those virtual disk files to backups.
