Hi All, I'm still trying to fine tune my backups to give the best bang for the buck time and effort wise. At present I am backing up all my Hyper-V vm's without GRT, and separately backing up my Exchange 2003 information store (VM). I was under the impression that if you backed up a VM using GRT then you could restore items like Exchange or AD, however I am unable to get this to work. When I attempt to use GRT for my VM's the backup fails with the log message: "an invalid parameter was specified". Should I be able to do it this way,or am I missing the point here? Any help greatly appreciated. Regards,

It's always preferable to separate database and file backups from each other, especially if you have AOFO enabled. Thanks!

You need to install RAWS on the VM to perform GRT backup and restore. Also if you want to backup applications like Exchange, SQL, AD etc you need to install respective license on the BE media server.

I am licensed for AD, Exchange, SQL and Sharepoint, and RAWS is installed on the Exchange VM. I can backup the Exchange server if I treat it as a physical machine.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for those links, it's Exchange 2003 so good reading there.

The takeaway for me was

Run Exchange backup jobs separately from other backup jobs.

Which kind of answers my question about keeping it neat by doing an "all in one" backup of a Hyper-V host.

It looks like I should continue to back up my Exchange Information Store as a separate job.
