Deleting Retired media

I have 60+ OSTs listed in my retired media. All of them are from 7 months ago and all of them are 50GB in size. I'd really like to get that space back. However, when I try to delete the media from Backup Exec it says....

"Note: Deleting backup-to-disk media does not delete the data from the disk. You must manually delete the data."

After poking around in folders, forums and googles, I still can't find where I can manually delete these files. Where should I be looking?

  • What version of BE you are using?

Ignore the above warning, simply delete the files from retired media set and then perform inventory.

Also click on Tools->Options->Media management->select use recyclable media before using

    scratch media set.

You have mentioned OST files so i believe you are using dedup, follow the below article to reclaim

    space http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH130103

  • Currently on 2010 R3. Recently upgraded from R2.

I deleted the files and performed inventory on all of my jobs. Performing inventory did not grant me any more freespace. I'm currently in the middle of following the doc that you listed.

Little bit of a backstory, I think the retired media came from a similiar situation as this...

I'm just trying to reclaim that space now. Thanks for the help, will return with results.

  • Hi,

Media can only be deleted from Backup Exec after it has been associated with the Retired Media set.

When deleted media is reused in Backup Exec, it is recognized as imported media. Before you can restore from the media, you must catalog it.

    Note:

Deleting media from Backup Exec is not the same operation as erasing media.

    To delete media

       1.      On the navigation bar, click Media.
       2.      Associate the media that you want to delete with the Retired Media set by doing one of the following:    Drag the media to the Retired Media icon.

Under Media Tasks on the task pane, click Associate with media set, select the Retired Media set to associate the media with, and then click Yes or Yes to all.
       3.      Double-click the Retired Media icon, and then select the media that you want to delete.
       4.      Under General Tasks in the task pane, click Delete.

If Delete is unavailable, the media is not associated with the Retired Media set. You must associate the media with Retired Media before Delete is available.
5.Click Yes or Yes to All to delete the media that are displayed.

  • I've deleted all of the retired media from the set and went through the processes suggested by Amol. Unfortunantely, I haven't gained any space from deleteing them. Thanks for the suggestions.

At this point, I don't know if the retired media data was actually taking up space or if it's just disk space bloat now. If I come across something, I will update.
