Desktop and Laptop Option 7.5 Questions Newbie
1. How does Desktop and Laptop Option 7.5 differ than Backup Exec 2010? What does it do?
2. Can I use Desktop and Laptop Option 7.5 in conjunction with Backup Exec 2010 without having to upgrade to Backup Exec 2012?
3. Do either of these products offer a recovery image or clone feature similar to Ghost?
4. We may be going to HC3 Virtualization and want to know if either of these will work as a SANS or NAS option?
Well just for starters DLO does have it's own forum because it is now a stand alone product

7.5 can run at the same time as BE 2010. It has to as the upgrade path from 2010 + DLO to 2012 + DLO is upgrade DLO to stand alone version first then upgrade 2010 to 2012. I am not sure how much long term testing of this setup has been done though as I suspect we only tested for a rolling upgrade.
The replacement for Ghost is SSR and not DLO or Backp Exec. SSR does have image based recovery. SSR forum is here

No idea what HC3 virtualization is however currently BE only supports Windows 2008 Hyper-V and VMware ESX (2012 Hyper-V, ESX 5.1 coming soon) Support for virtual technologies with little/no market share is not planned.
EDIT:just noticed you asked for a description of how DLO differs from Baclup Exec.
DLO is designed to protect user data on workstaions it is not designed to provide a Disaster Recovery function or to protect server based applications. It also cannot write to directly to tape as it is a disk product only. DLO 7.5 does include a form of deduplication based around single instance storage (which differs from the chunk level deduplication that is part of Backup Exec itself)
DLO is also a user centric product and not server centric - what this means is if two end users use the same machine the data for each user in DLO is considered to be a separate set of data. In Backup Exec we do not segerate by user but just look at the server resources themselves.
In Backup Exec 2010 and earlier DLO was included as part of the core product, there was also a stand alone version available for NetBackup customers. We have now discontinued the version of DLO that was part of Backup Exec and only provide the stand alone version (7.0/7.5)
