I've recently moved my Backup Exec from one server to another. The new server is an HP DL380 G3, running Windows 2003 R2 x32. I installed Backup Exec and successfully moved the data and catalog information from the old server to the new server. The final step was to get the device online and start my backup. Under device manager, it installed the most recent driver from Quantum for my device. However it never shows up in Backup Exec 12.5 as it did for my old server. How can I diagnose this? It is urgent of course as no backup is running now :( The Superloader 3 is an LTO2 drive, a few years old. The BIOS on startup on the new server also regognizes the Superloader to be on the SCSI ID that I set it to be on. I can't blame the hardware or the operating system at this point, I hope there is something I'm missing in BE! Please help, Kurt

A bit more of information, I've rebooted many times :)

In BE 12.5, there is a Stand Alone Drive listed for the new server, CERTANCE 1, but when I try to use this device for my backup job, the job just goes into a Queued state.

Do you see the "medium changer" in device manager? If not, I would suspect that this is a LUN based device and the HBA in the new server doesn't have multi LUN enabled for that SCSI ID. During the HBA/server POST, you should see two device, the changer/robot and the drive. If you don't see two, then focus your attention on the HBA.

...to add to what Larry is saying: make sure your autoloader isn't attached to an on-board SCSI controller. This isn't supported.
You can also reinstall the Symantec drivers for your device through Backup Exec, as this is what BE will need to get it working correctly.

No in the device manager it was Tape Drive device. In the POST I only remember seeing the one device. I'll look into the HBA.

CraigV - It is an onboard SCSI. WHO doesn't support it? Backup Exec? If so, that is completely lame, and makes no sense. Where in BE can I reinstall Symantec drivers?

Hi,

does the autoloader provide different running modes?
Random and Automatic?

If yes switch to random mode.
Run tapeinst.exe after downloading up-to-date device drivers from Symantec.

As long as the SCSI controller is not a raid controller, it is supported. Backup Exec doesn't support libraries attached to raid controllers.

I think the SCSI is also a RAID controller. In my Device Manager, I have SCSI and RAID controllers and one device is found - Smart Array 5i.

My old server had a SCSI card that I was using, looks like I'll have to put this card in my new server and go that route. I'll post my results!

I would suggest you to restart the BE services. Tools | BE services | Restart all services.....Make sure Rmovable storage service in the device manager is stopped and disabled in services.msc

RahulG Thanks for the link - I have a question about it:

The document is showing a Medium Changer in device list - I do not have this shown even though my backup device is an Autoloader (Quantum Superloader 3). I have Tape Drive list only in my device manager. Could this be something in the BIOS I need to look at?

It is a production server so I can not reboot it until after hours - I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before the end of th day.
