Disk staging for VTL duplication to tape

Hi,

If i have a D2D box (without NDMP) configured as a VTL and connected to a Backup Exec 2012 media server, does there need to be room on the media server to serve as a disk staging area when a tape in the VTL is duplicated to a physical tape?

Thanks!

  • Will be treated as restore from tape and requires Staging....

For any backup software VTL is not different from a physical tape library.

    Not required....

    Refer this TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO73372

Extract from TN: " If the devices are not NDMP-enabled, then Backup Exec performs a regular duplicate backup job."

For normal duplicate jobs, no need to have any free space on media server.

  • From disk to tape NO.

From tape to disk and using GRT, yes you will need it.

You ideally should be using the disk features of the D2D and not the VTL, it's cheaper and works with GRT on restores better.

  • Thanks guys. To help clarify, would a restore of a GRT enabled backup from a virtual tape in a VTL be treated as a restore from disk, or would this be treated like a restore from physical tape and require staging? Cheers.
