Duplicate two 1.6TB tapes to four 500GB tapes

Hi I have HP Autoloader that takes 4 tapes on left slot and 4 on right.

I have recently did a Full weekly backup (2TB data) at the end of the year 2011 on 2 x 1.6TB LTO tapes. One tape is full and other has only been used 30%.

Is there any way I can duplicate these two 1.6TB LTO tapes on 3/4 500GB LTO tapes using Backup Exec 2010 R3.

Help will be much appreciated.

  • Slots are just to keep the tapes within tape library, not to write data on tapes.

To duplicate backupsets from one tape to another, source tape has to be loaded into one tape drive and destination tape has to be loaded into another drive. So, you should have two tape drives configured with backup exec and LEO license installed to let BE work with both the drives in parallel.

From the link provided by you: Drive (1) Supported, depending on model

So you have to follow the alternative mentioned by rahul in his earlier post. First deuplicate backupsets to a B2D folder and then duplicate them from there to other tapes.

  • You can duplicate backup from tape to tape In backup exec .

If the  full backup which you have is taken from bakcup exec ? If yes then you can duplicate it . You cannot if the backup data is wrriten to tape by any other backup application .

In the job set up page, select new duplicate backup job , select the option to duplicate the exisiting backup set, select all the backup set you have on the two tapes.

If the orignal backup is taken on a different media server , you would need to run a catalog on the tapes and then configure the duplicate backup job .

The other thing which you should keep in mind is about tape drive licensing . By default you can use 1 tape drive in a Library without any library expansion license (LEO). To use additional drive you would need 1 leo license per drive . To use standalon drive there is no specific license as such .To perform Tape to tape Duplicate you need 2 tape drive , IF there is just one tape drive  , you would need to duplicate the data to backup to disk folder and then duplicate from disk to tape .

  • I think you might have to create a partition with 4 slots having 500 GB tapes to make sure that the duplicate will be written to 500 GB tapes only. (If you have all 500 GB tapes other than 2 1.6 TB tapes in the library then no need of partitions). And target your duplicate job at the partition.

  • Since you have only one tape drive, you cannot duplicate from tape to tape.  You would first have to duplicate the data onto disk then duplicate that onto tape.

  • Tape drive is the unit which is responsible to read and write data, It cannot read and write at the same time , so you need to drive . So you need to create a backup to disk folder which had sufficent amount of space where you can duplicate the 2 tapes with data and then from backup to disk you can again duplciate it to the tape .
